CHRONOLOGICAL HISTORY OF
|
|
1911-1919 The Bethel Baptist Church was established in 1911 by a small group of members who were originally a part of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, which was organized in 1887 in the home of Rev. and Mrs. Charles Ambrose. Rev. C.J. Smith was called as Pastor and the visionary founders were Mr. and Mrs. I.W. Williams and family, Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Brown and family, Rev. and Mrs. Myrick, Mr. C. Mosely and son, Walter, Mrs. Ellen Jackson and family and Mrs. Eugenia Dixon. Rev. Smith served until 1919 and during that period he organized the Deacon Board, the Mother's Board and Sunday School. 1919-1934 In 1919, Rev. E.W. Lewter was called and under his spiritual leadership much was accomplished. He served until 1934 and organized the unforgettable Choir Number One (that was credited as being the first colored group to broadcast over Radio Station WDBO). Usher Board Number One and the Baptist Young People Union (B.Y.P.U.) were also organized under Rev. Lewter's leadership. 1934-1942 Rev. M.L. Cherry came to Bethel in 1934. During his pastorate, the church was remodeled and enlarged and the name was changed to Bethel Progressive Baptist Church. With a $7,500.00 endowment from William A. Coursen, the adjacent lot east of the church was purchased and the parsonage built. He served until 1942 and organized the Trustee Board and Missionary Society and changed the Mother's Board to the Deaconess Board. 1942-1952 During the ensuing ten years, Bethel progressed under the pastoral leadership of Rev. J.L. McFarland (1942 - 1945) and Rev. T.C. Collier (1946 - 1952). The Overflow Room was added, the Junior Church was organized, as well as the Junior Choir. 1951-1957 During these years, Bethel was guided by five spiritual leaders: Rev. J.H. Frison (1952 - 1955); Rev. H.W. Calhoun (1955 - 1956); Rev. W.G. James and Rev. McKissic (1956 - 1957). Choir Number Two and Usher Board Number Two were organized. 1957-1960 In 1957, Rev. W.E. Sims was called. During his stay, the Junior Women's Auxiliary was organized and the Young Women's Auxiliary (Y.W.A.) became active. He also initiated the addition of the annex/dining room. |
